OPTIMIZING THE SBIRT SCREENING PROCESS
SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) is an evidence-based, best-practice strategy to reduce alcohol and drug use in the college setting. Historically, SBIRT has been administered with paper and pencil, interview style, or web-based with electronic feedback. Screen Aide optimizes the SBIRT process by using an interactive and engaging web-based application to gather alcohol and drug use data, collect other pertinent lifestyle information, and score individuals’ risks. Upon completion of the screen, the instrument generates an individualized report which staff use to connect with students and deliver meaningful interventions.
Instruments inspired by Industry Expertise
To collect data on alcohol and other drug use, Screen Aide employs the ASSIST (Alcohol Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test), a validated and evidenced-based instrument, developed by the World Health Organization and approved by the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. Unlike many other approved instruments, the ASSIST screens for alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other drug use.
Streamlined for Intervention Feedback
Screen Aide uses technology to streamline the current ASSIST process of manually answering questions and calculating substance use risk. Students’ assessments are scored instantly and results are output to a dashboard for the feedback provider. The dashboard includes individual scores for each substance and motivational interviewing questions and discussion points specific to the students’ risks.
